Feb 12, Claudia rated it liked it Shelves: series , romance , m-m , lgbt , urban-fantasy. So, I liked the storyline and, although I think it could have been more developed, it's interesting enough that I'm willing to keep reading the series.

Now, the romance Yeah, insta-love is not my favourite thing, even when it's dress-up as soulmates. It felt rushed, more talk than facts; both of them thinking how much they love the other, and yet, unable to really give their trust.

Yes, bad relationships may make you a little wary of new ones, but still No spark So, I liked the storyline and, although I think it could have been more developed, it's interesting enough that I'm willing to keep reading the series.

No spark between these two for me : Nevertheless, as I said, I like the premise of the series, so I'll be checking the rest of it. Wavering between 3.

Whenever in literature or film the theme of the first half of the twentieth century mobsters appears, for some reason I always have the impression that they lived a really long time ego, almost in the distant past.

However, at some point, my brain begins to take control and then I recall that although the world has changed beyond recognition since their times, there are still people who remember those years.

And that's how it works for me every time. First there's an impression, and only then th Whenever in literature or film the theme of the first half of the twentieth century mobsters appears, for some reason I always have the impression that they lived a really long time ego, almost in the distant past.

First there's an impression, and only then the understanding follows, what is really frustrating, but I can't really control it.

That's why I really liked the fact that the subject of the good old mobsters appeared in "Treasure Trail".

I admit, I know very little about this subject, but that's why I've read this novel with even more interest. Watching how Erik and Ben try to solve the past mystery, and figure out what happened during those times, that to me seem so distant, was something really fantastic and it stimulated my imagination.

After all, the days of prohibition and the rise of gangsters' activity have undoubtedly left behind many skeletons in the closets.

In "Treasure Trail" I really love the fact that both Erik and Ben are somewhat in a similar professional situation. What I mean in this case is that the work they did before coming to Cape May was in one way or another dangerous.

What's so special about it? Well, in literature, film or TV series, we usually see couples, in case of which only one of the partners had or has a dangerous job, so when the past haunts them, the other person easily becomes an innocent victim, and to some extent a martyr.

In "Treasure Trail" both characters carry a similar "baggage of dangers" over into their relationship, as both Ben and Erik can be someday chased by their past.

What is equally important, they are more or less ready, in terms of their skills and physical capabilities, to face the threatening situation.

So we can say that in their relationship they are equal in every respect, if you know what I mean.

Another advantage of this book, which I think is incredibly charming, is that we can find here a whole lot of characters who we already know from other series written by the same author.

Well, it is not a secret that writing as Gail Z. Martin or as Morgan Brice, the author likes to sometimes refer to her other works, and I personally love it with all my heart.

It is worth mentioning that in "Treasure Trail" accumulation of the characters from other series is much greater than in other novels.

The reader who is familiar with all this amazing protagonists observes the first interactions, mostly by call, between them, Erik and Ben with real pleasure, and at some point starts to really miss them.

But what about the readers who haven't yet met the characters from these other series who appear in "Treasure Trail"?

They can also make the most of it, because they not only have their first "dates" with the mentioned characters, but also have the opportunity to get interested in other novels by this author.

Martin's urban fantasy, as it is pure perfection. Finally, I would like to write a few words about some of the side characters we meet in "Treasure Trail", or more specifically, about the friends of our leads.

I really like the way the author builds and maintains great dynamics between the leading and side characters.

In the case of Ben's cousin, as well as Erik's neighbor we have a chance to see the dynamic, natural interactions and well-developed or built relations.

If we imagine friendship as a band joining individuals, then in "Treasure Trail" we really would be able to see it, because the author presents the ties between the characters in an amazing manner.

In this case, I also like the fact that Ben and Erik have someone to rely on, someone to talk to, ask for advice or help. In short, they are not alone in a new place, but they have someone who wants them to feel like home.

In summary, "Treasure Trail" is another great book by Morgan Brice, thanks to which we experience an amazing, exciting and interesting adventure alongside fantastic and lovable characters.

Believe me, when reading this novel you can't simply take a break from it, and when you finish it, you immediately want more.

Jul 03, Dieter Moitzi rated it it was amazing Shelves: gay-book-reviews. I received an ARC from the author in exchange for an honest review.

This review has been originally posted at Gay Book Reviews - check it out! And as losing my virginity goes, this was highly enjoyable, and the experience shall be repeated very quickly.

The author does have an already long l I received an ARC from the author in exchange for an honest review.

The author does have an already long list of published works out there, and moreover, this is apparently meant to be book 1 of a new series, so—hooray!

A writing technique I rather like, so I went with it unhesitatingly. Moreover, both turned out to have a somewhat similar background both worked undercover in one way or another for law enforcement agencies, both left their jobs, both had been recently disappointed and hurt by their ex-lovers.

But the author has another ace up her sleeve, which she plays skilfully. Meaning she mixes in her wee bit of magic and paranormal goings-on, and what could look like phony coincidences becomes a plausible and legitimate plot-device.

Even the insta-love our MCs experience something that makes me cringe more often than not finds a perfectly understandable explanation.

As far as the plot is concerned, the blurb says it all. Erick is an arts expert, and his ability to touch an object and get a glimpse of its past has helped his career so far.

And whom does he encounter but handsome Ben, ex-cop and ex-PI from Newark, who has moved in order to help his aunt run her local real estate rental agency.

Sparks are immediately flying between both of them, but it takes the clearing of an initial misunderstanding before both can enjoy their first date, kiss, and shag.

Being a sucker for good murder mysteries as well as well-invented magic-cum-paranormal plots, I was highly entertained by this novel—I got both.

They are warm-hearted persons with a sincere interest for each other. The secondary characters were just as endearing, the story murder, mystery, and paranormal threads well-planned, well-organized, and well-written.

A praiseworthy start for what I gather will be a good and highly recommendable series. Jul 18, Kat rated it it was amazing. A new paranormal book from Morgan Brice?

Having loved her Badlands and Witchbane series, you better believe I was interested. Erik Mitchel has left his high stake job as an art and antiquities fraud expert when the mafia and forces unknown nearly killed him.

He suffers from the aftereffects of near-death and has chosen a simpler life. He now owns an antique shop dealing with rare and unique pieces.

He has a "gift" that allows him to see ghosts, though he cannot communicate with the spirits.

He ca A new paranormal book from Morgan Brice? He can get feelings associated with handling certain objects. Being in Cape May seems like a good fit as apparently, it is the capital of all things metaphysical.

Ben Nolan is an ex-police officer from Newark, NJ. Since I grew up near this town, I have to admit it I was thrilled with the storyline.

Ben has relocated to this seaside town to help with his aunt's rental business. Ever since Ben's mother pushed him away for being gay, his aunt took over and gave him a loving family life.

Ben adores his aunt and is happy to help her thinking this will be short term but begins to enjoy the job especially when he meets Erik and feels an intense attraction for him.

Be aware, the author throws a lot at you in her novels and they are anything but simplistic. Twists and turns are part of her novels which attracts me to her writing.

A very haunted long-gone hotel called the Commodore Wilson, a box of mementos from said hotel, pissed off ghosts and a lost clock that is a pivotal clue to a past crime are just a few of the wild happenings that merge in and out of this spectral roller coaster.

I did love the hot chemistry between the two men but I felt the lightning-fast pull to say the L-word was not too realistic. Both men were treated unfairly by their former partners and clearly carry their distrust and hurt with them.

I have never been a fan of insta love and for it to work I need to forget the amount of time the lovers have been together. I was very aware it was mere days when they both started having intense feelings of love.

Since the story was so well written I was able to not let that issue drag down the story for me. A small amount of realistic doubt is thrown into the mix during a frantic scene when the men wonder if they will see each other again.

Overall, a great mystical mystery and I highly recommend this book where the unexpected and unlikely become the norm. Jun 30, Sherry rated it liked it.

Treasure Trail is actually the first book in one of three series she is currently writing, all set in the same world but focusing on different couples.

When Ben finds a mysterious antique clock in one of the rentals, he brings it to Erik, which sets off a chain of events that culminates in Erik nearly losing his life before the two of them have a chance to be together.

I much prefer the approach taken by Ilona Andrews in their Hidden Legacy novels, where you know Nevada and Rogan will wind up together, but they have to work for it.

That quibble aside, Treasure Trail is a good read. The author knows how to write likeable characters that grab your attention and make you root for them.

Erik has the power of psychometry; he can sense information about objects by touching them. By the end of the book, Erik and Ben have become part of a network of people both mortal and immortal with powers of their own, which is also going to keep them busy.

A copy of this book was provided by the author for review; all opinions expressed are my own. Jul 18, Anne Barwell rated it it was amazing Shelves: m-m , ebook , wish-list-print-copy.

Like other books from this author, the settings feel like characters in their own right, and add to the richness of the story.

I became invested in Erik. Ben, and their stories, both separately and together, very quickly.

Both have been damaged by their pasts, and need a new start. I also liked that these guys are in their mid 30s rather than young men in their 20s as they bring more of their life experience to the story.

I had to smile at the Supernatural reference, and I love that Ben has framed Marvel posters, and that Erik is much more capable to defending himself that I expected, given his nerdy university vibe.

I loved the family feeling of the supporting cast, and how they do support each other, and Erik and Ben.

She totally rocks! The plot kept me turning pages, with its red herrings as to who the bad guys were.

The showdown was exciting, and I loved the way ghosts figure into this story, and how they do their bit in supporting the action, and Eric, Ben, and their new friends too.

The epilogue and set up for the series made me very happy. Jul 12, ButtonsMom rated it it was amazing Shelves: blog. A new genre and new author for me and I loved it!

Treasure Trail is the first book in a new series and the first one I've read by Morgan Brice. It's also the first as far as I can remember anyway urban fantasy book I've ever read.

I can't really say why, but I just never thought that urban fantasy books would appeal to me.

But Morgan Brice will be an attending author at a book convention I'm going to in February so I decided to read and review Treasure Trail when I was offered a review copy.

I am so glad that I decided to read this book. It grabbed me right from the start and kept me fully engaged until I finished it.

It brought me to tears in a few places, which is a sure sign that I really liked it. The book has mystery, suspense, romance and good friends who help each other.

Both of the MCs have special gifts they can see ghosts , but Erik has something more. As Erik and Ben get to know each other bad things keep happening around them.

There are unsolved murders, a skeleton found in a closet, and other interesting objects involved in the story. After I read this book, I learned that some of the supporting characters are from another series by this author Badlands , and some are from series written by her other pen name, Gail Z.

I know that I am now especially eager to read the Badlands series. Treasure Trail was a great introduction to the urban fantasy genre and a great introduction to Morgan Brice's writing.

I will definitely be reading more of her books and I look forward to meeting her in February A copy of this book was provided to me but my review was voluntary and not influenced by the author.

Cape May is a chance for Erik to start over after both his job and his relationship implode. Ben is looking for a fresh start when he comes to Cape May to take over the family rental agency.

Ghosts maybe common in Cape May, but ghosts put Ben and Erik on a mystery that may not be as far in the past as they originally thought.

The romance is very insta-love, but it's actually acknowledged by the MCs as being a very fast romance so it overall I received an ARC edition of this book from the author.

The romance is very insta-love, but it's actually acknowledged by the MCs as being a very fast romance so it overall works well.

I did find the sudden second guessing by Ben to be a bit off-putting not the trust but verify attitude, but rather that he pushed the verify side a bit too much for my tastes.

The mystery was good, with lots of layers to keep the plot moving. I liked the paranormal elements, they blended well with the suspense without overwhelming the other elements.

I'll be interested to see what Erik and Ben get up to in the future. Martin , you'll recognize some characters, but neither series is necessary to understand this book.

Though if you like this story, you'll want to read the others as well! Jul 14, Bretton Coppedge rated it really liked it.

This is the first in a new series of loosely connected paranormal romances. The series typically involve solving some kind of crime and falling in love along the way.

In this story, we get introduced to Erik, who used to be the Indiana Jones of art appraisal, and Ben, a former cop turned former PI turned rental agent.

The setting is the vacation town of Cape May New Jersey. The paranormal plot line revolves around ghosts, both literally and figurative, that haunt the town.

As is typical with Mor This is the first in a new series of loosely connected paranormal romances. As is typical with Morgan Brice stories, the MCs are older and are actually looking to settle down.

The connection between them when they do meet for the first time which is a little ways through the book is like that of soulmates. Despite that, it still takes a while for them to get together.

This story certainly has heat but I wouldn't necessarily say that the romance is the focus. So if you're looking for jump in sheets first, ask questions later then this is not that.

Unfortunately, I do have to say that this story didn't resonate as well with me. My favorite series in the paranormal universe is the one that follows Simon and Vic.

It's possible that with later installments, the paranormal action will heat up along with the romance though.

I'd recommend this to those that like mature MCs and paranormal universes. Ghosts Among Us Murder, cursed hotels, haunted houses, danger, intrigue and most of all, love.

Ben was an ex-police detective turned PI. Erik used to recover stolen art and investigate art frauds. Both moved to Cape May for a change in career and way of life.

With them, they bring a whole lot of trouble as strange things start happening. Erik has some special skills that help him with his antiquities business and make him fit right in with Cape May.

Ben is more cautious in believing things that c Ghosts Among Us Murder, cursed hotels, haunted houses, danger, intrigue and most of all, love.

The two have an instant connection from their first encounter, but their fragile bond is tested when Ben is forced to reevaluate how he sees the world.

Erik is sweet and I hope he learns how to grow into his skills. Their journey to be together is a slow burn with lots of yummy tension, including some hot phone calls, as they keep trying to be together, but life interferes.

They also each have past issues they are working through but when they are together they help each other heal.

I want to visit Cape May and try all this food, maybe go on some ghost tours. A fun read by Morgan Brice and a great start to a new series.

It was just one little point that bugged me. I liked getting to know these characters and seeing the story from both of their points of view helped me understand them just a bit more.

Jul 02, Theresa Burrow rated it it was amazing. Erik was burnt out. His career ferreting out artistic forgeries had almost gotten him killed.

His relationship had fallen apart. So he found an antique store in Cape May, and planned on writing his blog and settling down into the small town.

Erik has the ability to touch objects and see their past. He can also see ghosts. So when a friend finds a clock that came from the Commodore Wilson Hotel and asks him to verify if it really is authentic Erik also meets Ben, a very hunk Erik was burnt out.

Erik also meets Ben, a very hunky private investigator, who he is instantly attracted to. The hotel had been a mob hangout and rumors circulated about what happened to the owners.

Erik is intrigued by the story but strange things begin to happen in town. And Eric wants to find the answers. Throw in lust, lots of hot sex, and tinglings of magic and the race is on.

Not only are the major characters well written, but minor characters like Erik's neighbor, Susan, make this an exceptional book to read.

It was a quick read and I didn't want to put it down.

Now, I keep saying "north" and "south" although obviously one must also go east to get to the shore , but what we really say when we're going to the shore is that we're going "DOWN.

And yet, the characters in this book, both the transplant and the native, repeatedly say they're going "up" to Cape May including from Newark Nails on a blackboard, that.

Also, please note, it is the "Shore," not the "Coast" -- the title of that show was not random. Surely now everyone knows that?

Other petty cavils I'm sorry, but they bugged me! Ben and Erik go to a restaurant at "the marina" -- which one??? There is no single marina that I am familiar with in Cape May lots of small ones, though.

They also go to a Greek restaurant somewhere in the historic district in walking district from Erik's store that serves Yes, diners are owned by Greek people and often serve Greek food, but the whole point of diners is that they serve all kinds of food besides the Greek specialties whereas they were only given a two page menu that apparently only had Greek food on it.

Given that this book turned a lot on the history of mob involvement in Cape May, why was Atlantic City absent? Finally, to conclude my jeremiad of pettiness: so Ben's cousin Sean lives in Wildwood.

Yes, sure, there could be traffic or something there can always be traffic in NJ, particularly down the shore , but in general, it is no big deal to go back and forth between Wildwood and Cape May.

We certainly did when I was a kid. And yet Ben and Sean act like he's having to go back to IDK, Newark or something.

Mostly, what was missing was any mention of any actual Cape May things: where was the actual beach? Where was the boardwalk?

Congress Hall? They did go to the lighthouse, but nothing about it felt specific also, it doesn't have an actual lighthouse keeper and the park rangers interact with people all the time, that's their job?

All the food they ate, and yet no one had taffy? Or fudge? No boardwalk fries? No one looked for any Cape May Diamonds? The actual story was fine.

It wasn't much of a mystery, but it was fine, and I liked the characters enough. Jul 11, Carra rated it really liked it. I like the new setting in Cape May gotta love real places that have a haunted reputation!

The tension mounts even as the two guys gradually accept their burgeoning relationship and reveal their respective painful pasts and dangerous past professions.

It was even better to have several cameos by folks from the other series penned by this prolific and talented author. I delight in the opportunity to get a glimpse of them and look forward to some of them getting their time in the spotlight again.

Those in search of an exciting mystery story with a paranormal twist will enjoy this tale—but beware, once captivated, nothing else will get done!

The series and characters might be new but they are connected to the overall universe of magic and paranormal that the author has created.

Erik is friends with Simon Kincade from Badlands and has similar touch magic skills to Simon's cousin. Ben it turns out knows someone that knows Travis who appears in both the Badlands series and the Witchbane series.

The style of the stories are similar as you would expect but this time the focus is on art and antiques as befitting Erik's past and woo-woo skills.

I recommend getting this marvelous gem immediately!!!! Jun 29, Janet rated it really liked it. Great first book in a new series I am really looking forward to the next books as this first one is very dramatic.

Old things and creepy histories. Hints of beautiful coastal scenery, and crazy paranormal beings.

I enjoyed the historic elements, who and why and where all the old people were. I now know Cape May and Wildwood are real, some googling going one there!

I liked enough to look at the othe Wavering between 3. I liked enough to look at the other linked books and will keep an eye out for more Ben and Erik Feb 10, James rated it liked it.

While the book is fun, it does feel a bit like reading two skeletons setting up a support beam to hold a larger tent up as we eventually prepare for a meganovel crossover.
